The monograph is the first to wholly establish the literary and everyday relationships of Gogol with the literary circle that existed while studying at the Prince Bezborod'ko Gymnasium of Higher Sciences in Nizhyn, in which the creative biography of the writer begun. This work is based on extensive factual material (mostly archival), much of which is used for the first time. The conditions for the formation of literary orientations of Gogol and other pupils of the gymnasium are identified. The teaching of verbal disciplines, the literary creations of the gymnasium students largely related to the learning process are considered. Directories of the gymnasium and private student libraries are introduced into the scientific circulation. The composition of their meetings, which determined the range of students' reading, is researched. The artistic heritage of the gymnasium writers is analyzed in the context of the literary process of 1820s-1830s, their varied literary and friendly relations with Gogol are studied.
The book is intended for historians of Russian and Ukrainian literature of the XIX century, bibliographers, cultural researchers and the wider audience.
